‘Empire’ season 3 will crossover with new series ‘Star’ during fall finale
The folks over at Fox’s “Empire” are making one thing very clear at the moment, and that is their overall level of interest in trying to make their fellow new series “Star,” executive-produced by Lee Daniels, into some sort of a success.
Today, The Hollywood Reporter made it clear that the scene tonight (see below) is going to air during the winter finale of “Empire,” and it serves as an introduction into Lenny Kravitz’s character of Roland, someone who is very important in the new series, which is about an up-and-coming girl group in which his daughter is a member. We hear a little bit about Alexandra in here in terms of Lucious’ overall appreciation for her, but at the same exact time, not a whole lot more in terms of her own personality.
In some ways, this sneak peek is blatant product placement at its finest, but can you really blame Daniels, “Empire,” or Fox for doing this? We’re looking at a network here that is hardly in the midst of a great sense; ratings for several of their shows are down by a steady margin, and they need to figure out a way in which to get more people watching. Releasing this sort of sneak peek may be just the thing that helps to provide a boost.
Also, this preview is significant in proving the fact that these shows are in fact set in the same universe, something that we weren’t quite sure about when “Star” first cast Naomi Campbell, who previously appeared in a couple of episodes of “Empire” as a different character. Sometimes, you just have to suspend belief, and we suppose that if she ever comes over to “Empire” again maybe some joke will be made about the physical similarities between her and someone else.
Even if you hate the scene, look at it this way: It’s just an extra minute or two of the episode.
