‘Teen Wolf’ season 6, episode 5 reaction: Finding Canaan; was Stiles’ story the best this season?
One of the reasons that we were excited going into “Teen Wolf” season 6 was that by and large, this particular story of the Ghost Riders tapped into something way more important than special effects or teen werewolves lunging at each other: It dealt with the thing almost everyone fears most in losing your legacy. No one wants to be forgotten, and everyone wants to feel as though they’ve had some sort of impact on the world. Maybe not everyone channels it in the best possible way, but some of those said sentiments are still there nonetheless.
Through most of Tuesday’s episode, you saw some of these feelings play out for the Stiles character as he struggled to further come to grips with everything that had transpired to him; yet, he learned that he was also not alone in his new world courtesy of the emergence of Peter. He may not have been the first person that he wanted to see over there, but the collaboration between the two helped in some ways to get to that moment of communication near the end.
Due to Roscoe and a certain radio, Scott and Lydia found a way to communicate to Stiles on the other side, and while the moment was brief, it was enough to reinforce that Lydia remembered precisely what Stiles said about her loving her. Consider this a moment for all of the ‘shippers everywhere, but there is still a larger conversation to be had here.
Speaking of larger conversations, can we speak for a minute here about Claudia? Specifically, Stiles’ parents and namely his new-found mother weren’t all that willing to hand down much information about Roscoe, which furthers along the theories that she may not be being forthcoming about how much she remembers about her son. Maybe there is an awareness there with her that she is only there because he is not, and if he comes back, she will go. We could certainly understand there being a bit of emotional dissonance that comes along as a result of this dilemma, especially since her emotional attachment to said son is not entirely there.
Overall, we do have to say that this may be the strongest “Teen Wolf” episode is some time — it was simple, but in focusing mostly on the characters, the show reminded us that they are the stars more so than the premise or anything supernatural. Also, we have our tease for next week: “Find Canaan.” There, more answers could be uncovered.
