NBC’s ‘This Is Us’ continues ratings dominance with another live+3 high

This Is Us -How high will “This Is Us” go this season? It’s an interesting topic of conversation, especially since there are few ratings-related stories like this out there in the TV news cycle. So often — and even with shows like “The Walking Dead” and “Empire” — we are talking about series that are more on the way down. With that, isn’t it nice to talk about one that is one the way up for a change?

Per a new press release, the live+3 data for this past episode “Last Christmas” suggests that the series, featuring Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, and many more, ended up drawing a 4.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and also 15.4 million viewers. These are the biggest numbers for the series to date, and in our mind you really have to go back to start of “Empire” to see another example of a network series that continued to surge in numbers throughout the season.

If you were to ask us why in the world “This Is Us” keeps improving at a time when so many other shows are falling, the biggest reason is its heart. This is a show that makes people feel at a time when we’ve all become so hardened and cynical. It’s dramatic, but at the same time escapism from the outside world. It allows us to cut out a lot of the static and make us realize that family comes first. There are so many factors that go into why a shot is a hit, and we’d attribute this one to brilliant scripts, heartfelt subject matter, great performances, and a little bit of good fortune. It arrived at a time when many Americans were craving a show like this.

As for whether or not it will keep the momentum going entering the new year, we’ll just have to see when the show returns with new episodes next month. It’s not taking a long hiatus, and we do think that will help to keep the momentum going.
