‘Shameless’ season 8: Could Mickey reunite with Ian again?

Tonight’s new episode of “Shameless” was a story of many partings, both definitive and potentially temporary. Back at the Gallagher house, we ended up saying farewell to Monica courtesy of what seems to be a drug overdose she had after a night of wedded(?) bliss with Frank and others. Meanwhile, for Ian (pictured above) he decided to close the book on Mickey by allowing him to leave for Mexico, but not going with him. He realized that his longtime love was on the lam, and couldn’t stay in the country; he just also realized that there was no way he could have the life that he wanted with him. he changed over the year, but unfortunately, Mickey didn’t change with him to be on the same wavelength.

So is this the end of Noel Fisher’s character on the show? As beloved as the Ian / Mickey pairing is (understandably so, given they are great), it’s hard to imagine a way in which the two get involved in each other’s lives once more. Still, Fisher did not rule it out for an eighth season or otherwise, saying the following to TVLine:

“I really have no idea what the future holds for Mickey in terms of the show. If he can break out of prison, he can get back into the country, that’s for sure. I think the door is kind of left open. Whether or not that’s something that happens, I really don’t know. But it could.”

For us, we foresee the challenge for the writers moving forward when it comes to these two being as such: Finding a way to loop them back into one another’s live while at the same time also doing justice to the characters. For many, bringing Ian back to his early self wouldn’t be satisfying, and we also want to see Mickey grow as well. If there’s a way to do this and have the great chemistry we love back on the show, we’re all for it … provided a season 8 even happens, since for right now that is up in the air.
