‘The X Factor’ UK final: Our take on Little Mix, Kylie Minogue, Madness, Matt Terry, Saara Aalto, and more
Tonight, the grand final of “The X Factor” 2016 is airing on ITV, and we want to make sure that no matter where you are or how you’re watching the event, you’ve got an article companion to everything that goes down! Over the course of the night we’re going to be using this article as our one-stop shop for all things pertaining to the finale, though we do plan on deviating from there here and there to give you quick takes on some specific topics such as the winner’s single and ultimately the reveal of the winner.
Be sure to refresh the page throughout the episode for more! The performers we have listed in the finale are just a select few of the people who will be turning up during the night; knowing this show, there are probably going to be a few surprise appearances from people who were not announced in advance to be taking part.
Kylie a.k.a. Kylie Minogue, “Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good)” – While is Kylie going with the one-name treatment, other than trying to confuse us? Some ignorant millennials will probably now compare her to Kylie Jenner, which is a facepalm-worthy moment if there ever was one. Eventually Saara Aaalto and Matt Terry joined her on the stage for one super-cheery celebration that almost made us forget that this was 2016.
Saara Aalto, “It’s Oh So Quiet” – Simon Cowell really described the appeal of Saara as an entertainer in a nutshell: So much of the reason why she is so adored directly correlates to the fact that she is such an energetic, unique performer. It would be easy for her to come out there and perform big ballads, especially on a night like tonight; instead, she chose to go with the quirky Bjork song that helped her become such a star in the first place.
Matt Terry, “Writing’s on the Wall” – This was the perfect comeback for Matt, who chose to perform one of the strongest performances that he’s given since the start of the show. He brought a ton of intensity and great vocal theatrics to this. While we would say he’s not necessarily as unique as Saara is vocally, he’s probably your winner pick your’re grading someone on the overall body of work.
Madness, some medley of madness – We have utterly no idea what exactly this was, but we’re sure that some fans of the band out there likely enjoyed it. It just felt like a really weird choice to bring them onto a show in 2016 — even if we do really like “Our House.”
Little Mix, medley – There were trench coats, there were big notes, and more than anything else, there was at least enough of an effort put into the staging here to distract us from how long we were being forced to wait for the results of the night to be revealed.
