‘Notorious’ season 2: Renewal hopes Piper Perabo – ABC drama
Tonight on ABC, you’re going to see the network closing its doors on “Notorious” with its season 1 finale — but will this also be the end of the series as a whole?
Based on what we’re seeing going into the finale, we’re not altogether optimistic. The show to date is averaging a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and while that is actually better than some other shows on the schedule such as “Quantico,” “Conviction,” and “Secrets and Lies,” that does not necessarily mean that it is meeting expectations. Remember here that this is a show that is airing following “Grey’s Anatomy” on the schedule, and that show is averaging a 2.2 rating at present. When your show is losing more than half of the ratings of the one that is coming on before it, that’s a trouble spot unless the show coming on before you is some sort of monster hit drawing numbers that will leave jaws hanging on the floor. With the other shows that we’ve mentioned, “Conviction” is the only one in a similar sort of situation.
Another cause for our concern is that ABC doesn’t really seem to be promoting the finale all that heavily, and it’s airing on a night without new episodes of many of its typical Thursday-night shows. If you go over to their website, it’s not even being extensively promoted.
Of course, we would still love to see it get some sort of last-minute premiere; we’ve always liked Piper Perabo, and there are very few other shows that really focus on the media as a primary subject matter. Given the current climate out there, a show like this makes a lot of sense. The biggest problem we’ve always felt with this show, unfortunately, is that ABC didn’t even give it #TGIT billing. It always felt like a show that was borrowing the timeslot until “Scandal” came around, and it’s hard for any show to be in a position to succeed with that in mind.
ABC will formally announce their decision on the future of the series by the time upfronts roll around in May.
