‘Agents of SHIELD’ season 4, episode 9: Could Coulson romance the wrong Agent May?
Tuesday night’s new episode of “Agents of SHIELD” was rather fantastic in both concluding the Ghost Rider arc and also setting up what is to come with the LMD chapter a little bit later this season, but there were also some interesting ramifications that could come as a result of what we saw.
For more evidence of this, you really don’t have to look a whole lot further than what we saw with Coulson and May. There’s clearly something going on between the two of them; for the first time in a long time, they’re in a place where something can happened. Rosalind Price and Andrew are both gone, and there isn’t as much standing in their way in the event that something did happen. It’s very clear at this point that there isn’t exactly some strict no-romance policy over at SHIELD that is dictating whether or not certain characters opt to be together. We wouldn’t necessarily say that anyone’s throwing caution to the wind, but Coulson and May know each other and have for a very long time. That minimizes a great degree of the risk that is out there, especially since if something happened, they would still be able to work and function like adults.
Now comes the twist: What if Coulson ends up getting in a relationship with the wrong May? If we go in this direction, could we really run into a situation where Clark Gregg’s character goes to this place with an LMD, and how would he feel emotionally if and when he realizes precisely what’s happened? This could be one of the greatest tests of the Coulson – May relationship to date. He may feel a certain amount of guilt that he didn’t detect it sooner, in addition to some of the awkwardness that could generally come from such a situation breaking out.
No doubt, we do think that a twist like this could be incredibly entertaining, even if we would feel rather bad for Phil in the process. Any time that we can throw personal lives into the series is a chance worth taking, provided that it doesn’t overwhelm any other aspect of the show.
