‘Bull’ episode 8 review: Isabella Colon brings Jason’s past to light
For much of “Bull” so far as a series, we’ve been craving a deeper connection to the show. Namely, we’ve been craving backstory. While we’ve gotten a chance to learn a few things about many of these characters over the course of the series’ run, at the same exact time we wouldn’t go so far as to say that we know all of them very well. This is even more true for the title character, and therein lies the main crux of this story.
Tonight in “Too Perfect,” Yara Martinez made her first in what will hopefully be many appearances as Isabella Colon, Jason’s ex-wife and Benny’s sister. She was a powerful woman with her own lifestyle brand, and her presence gave her a mild amount of celebrity status in New York. Unfortuantely for her, she found herself in a rather enormous pickle tonight, given the fact that she was named in a wrongful death lawsuit that one of her products led to a woman’s death. Her attorney ended up giving Bull a call, and an extremely awkward case ensued where we saw tension abounding with several different characters.
For Bull, he had to figure out how to work with someone who didn’t really have the best history with him — but some of it was his own fault. He was so committed to the job that his commitment was not there with his wife, and at one point, we learned that there was also a miscarriage. Much of this came out during what was an intimate conversation with Bull, one that was in part planned as a means to ensure that she was not found liable. The title of “Too Perfect” was a clear reference to the fact that much of the public wanted her to be guilty, mostly because it would damage her public image. This sort of nastiness is actually a pretty solid reflection of how Twitter culture works in 2016.
As for the relationship between Benny and Izzy, they may still be in better shape now than they were. She made it clear why she was so hard on him at times, but we also don’t exactly see them hanging out on a daily basis anytime soon. There’s still some tension there with him deciding not to work with her.
In the midst of all of the personal drama, in turn Bull also helped to figure out the actual killer of Olivia, a young woman who would stoop to any measure in order to meet her. He closed things off a heartfelt conversation with Izzy, one that helped him understood that there was common ground. The two shared a kiss as she was able to go about her life, but there wasn’t much of an indication that there is a future beyond that … at least for now.
Grade: A-. These are the episodes of a show like “Bull” that we enjoy the most: Ones that capture the DNA of the series, but at the same time also give you a little bit of further insight into precisely who these characters are. There was humor, but also several doses of heart as it became so much clearer as to why Bull is how he is, and also why much of his personal life fell apart in the first place.
