‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13 debate: Should Alex get his old job back?

Grey's 0

Grey’s Anatomy” is now on hiatus until we roll around to the new year, so for the next few weeks, we’re left to ponder over questions pertaining to the show and its characters. For the time being, it shouldn’t surprise anyone out there that the majority of the questions that we have are about Alex. How could it not be based on the way the first part of the season ended?

For those who want a quick refresher, here’s a little bit of a reminder of everything that happened: We saw the character go to enter a plea deal in the assault case, only for Meredith to leave him a voicemail at the last second pleading for him not to do it. Jo may also be planning something of her own to keep him from doing it. He’s still reacting to the news, as well, that she has a husband who was abusive and she’s hiding out from him. That’s influencing him on some level, given that he doesn’t want her to have to testify and potentially ruin the life she’s created in Seattle.

There are a number of questions worth wondering now, including if there is a way for DeLuca to realize that maybe this process is torture enough for Alex that he doesn’t need anything else troubling him. For now, though, the specific question that we’re emphasizing is a rather simple one (and it’s in the title): If he manages to get out of this without jail time, could he go back to his old job immediately?

On the surface, we’d love to answer this question with a clear, defiant yes, given that he’s incredible at what he does and the hospital could use his skills. However, at the same time it may not be that easily. Even if he is not sentenced to any prison time, the hospital’s its own institution and can choose to do what they want with him; therefore, keeping him in the clinic a while longer while the talk of the case dies down could be a viable move for them to eliminate distractions. We also whether or not there would be concerns about if Alex and DeLuca could coexist in the aftermath of what happened; that’s something that they haven’t really had to do yet with the two of them working in different places. It’s not like these people are working at a local carnival; it’s a hospital, and there are lives in jeopardy. That must perpetually be the focus.

Hopefully, we’ll get an answer to the question of Alex’s future sooner rather than later — and in the process, hopefully we’re also going to get a chance to learn more about the future of him and Jo, given that this relationship was for a time one of the stronger ones on the show.
