‘Elementary’ season 5, episode 9 preview: Aidan Quinn directs key Shinwell Johnson episode

ElementaryAs we near the end of the first part of “Elementary” season 5 on CBS, there are many questions rising to the surface, with one of the biggest ones being just when we’re going to have a chance to see the culmination of the Shinwell Johnson story. Can he be a trusted ally for Sherlock Holmes and Joan Watson, or will he eventually find himself back in trouble? It feels in some ways like the writers are teetering that line, and have been for much of the season to date.

This could continue moving into the next new episode on December 11 entitled “It Serves You Right to Suffer,” one that is going to be directed by none other than series star Aidan Quinn a.k.a. Captain Gregson. We imagine that there will be key developments that impact the long-term story in a big way; as for the short-term, we do have to say that we find this to be equally interesting and exciting.

Synopsis – “When Shinwell comes to Holmes and Watson for help after he’s framed for a gang killing, they have three days to find the real murderer before he is arrested and sent back to jail, on ELEMENTARY, Sunday, Dec. 11 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. The episode was directed by series star Aidan Quinn, in his television directorial debut.”

In some ways, you can argue that this is yet another example in a long line of shows following in the whole trope of “series regular gets arrested for a crime they did not commit.” We wouldn’t be upset with you if you were to categorize the story in such a way. However, at the same time there’s something extremely different here in that we’re talking about a character who’s spent time behind bars before, and unfortunately is going to battle in this episode past some of the stigma that goes along with that.
