Ratings Progress Report: Is ‘Lucifer’ season 2 doing enough to score season 3 renewal?
Earlier this fall, we had some rather-lovely news handed down when it comes to “Lucifer“: Fox was picking up the series, starring Tom Ellis and so many more, for a full season for the first time. Given that the show started off in midseason for season 1, it never had this opportunity before now.
What this means is that we’re going to get a chance to see if these characters can sustain a longer run, and if it can keep the ratings that it has this fall through all the way to the spring. In our latest edition of our Ratings Progress Report series, we’ll be doing our best in order to attempt to gauge the future possibilities.
The case for keeping it – Fox is doing pretty terrible on the year. Other than “Empire” and “Lethal Weapon,” there’s not a single hour-long series drawing great numbers. “Lucifer” is faring better than anything that the network is airing on either Tuesday or Thursday, so if there are some changes that they make, odds are they’ll start by looking at shows like “Scream Queens,” “Rosewood,” and “Pitch.” Given that we’ve also got another show ending in “Bones,” there could be a little more room on the schedule moving forward than the average season to keep a show with lower ratings.
The case for letting it go – The biggest one is simply that so far this season, the show’s average of a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic is down over 25% versus season 1. That sort of drop is always troublesome, though we will say that there is a slight caveat here in that last season, part of the show aired after “The X-Files” and was able to generate some larger numbers as a result of that. The ratings are fairly consistent so far this season, so while lower, there are signs of stability.
Overall – We do think “Lucifer” will get a season 3 if the numbers hold. Fox needs solid, popular programming, and even if the numbers aren’t huge, they’re good enough in this climate to be worthy of getting another kick at the can.
Should “Lucifer” be renewed for another season? We want to hear your thoughts on the subject now in the attached poll!
