Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, National Dog Show dominate in ratings
It should be no surprise to anyone at all out there that the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade completely dominated in the ratings, given the fact that this is a tradition around the holiday, and it is the sort of thing people gather around to watch. What may surprise many people out there is the news that this is still one of the most-watched versions of this said parade in many years.
Overall, the 90th iteration of this big event ended up drawing a 7.7 rating in the key 18-49 demographic, making this the highest-rated non-sports broadcast on any of the Big Four networks since the Academy Awards earlier this year. It’s also the highest-rated version of the parade in 13 years. Who said that everyone out there is getting rid of their TV packages? This is really proof of the opposite.
The appeal of the parade is very simple: It’s a symbol of the holiday and a great way to get it started for many people all around the country. Traditions are one of the things that really unify us, and given how divided at times 2016 has made us as a people, there’s probably a part of all of us out there that inherently craves an opportunity to watch something that brings us back to a simpler time.
In other news on the night, the National Dog Show ended up drawing a 3.4 rating in the demo, which is the highest rating it’s received in that measure since NBC first started to track the numbers for it in such a way. What we think of this show mostly is that it’s a great tradition for dog lovers, and for everyone else it’s either an alternative to NFL football or something to just leave on TV while you get together a big meal.

This is the highest rated show NBC has next to SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL & AMERICA’S GOT TALENT.
How can NBC keep this viewership all year long?
