‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 8 spoilers: Could Nina Dobrev return … as Katherine?
When everyone spends so much time talking about the end of “The Vampire Diaries” as a series, the general assumption that many make is that if Nina Dobrev is going to return to the series, she will be doing so in the part of Elena Gilbert. After all, she was the main character for the first six seasons, and we inhabited her world more so than any other.
Now that we’ve said this, is it possible that we could see her other famed alter ego in Katherine instead? While on paper this may sound relatively crazy and not entirely realistic, it’s certainly something that you can’t rule out. It’s also something that executive producer Julie Plec is keeping in mind, based on what she told Entertainment Weekly on the subject of the similarities between her death and also what went on recently with Georgie being dragged all the way down to Hell:
“I will confirm nothing, but the visual similarities are not accidental … The big question of the season is: How do our characters fit in this world?” Plec says. “Are they all doomed? Is there a chance for redemption? Can you earn your way back out of a one-way ticket to Hell? And even characters that have been heroes, are they already marked? If so, what the hell are they going to do about it?”
Questions about Hell and coming back for it are the sort of things that should be explored on this season eventually, especially since we’re now seeing someone in Seline seemingly trying to bring a little bit more of a touch of Hell back up to Earth. The idea is exciting, but you also want to be wary in making sure that if you go there, it’s not just like what “Once Upon a Time” did this past season.
In general, though, we’ll be happy for any opportunity we can get to see Katherine on the show.
