‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 8, episode 5 video: Alaric interrogates Sybil

TVD -There’s some great news coming up on Friday night’s new episode of “The Vampire Diaries“: There’s a carnival! Unfortunately, that’s just about the only good news that you’re going to see for many of these characters.

The first scene of things going awry in this episode can be found in its very title: “Coming Home Was a Mistake.” If this was an hour meant to inspire countless happy moments and hand-holding, don’t you think someone would’ve conjured up a name for it that was a little less ominous? We do like to think so.

The next bit of evidence (consider this Exhibit B) can be found in the new sneak peek below, which features Alaric basically going full on Revenge Mode all over Sybil in her interrogation room. From his vantage point, we understand why given that he wants to get some sort of vengeance on her over what seems to be the death of Tyler. Hey, maybe he is somehow still alive despite being mauled by Damon, but it feels unlikely. The only hope we have for something like that is our own personal hope, which stems primarily from a desire to not see Tyler’s story end in the most depressing, soul-crushing way imaginable. Can you really blame us?

After what Alaric does to Sybil here, torturing her effectively in hopes of learning where her fellow siren is, you gotta believe that this will be problematic when he realizes that it’s actually Seline, his own nanny.

This brings us to Exhibit C — the photo above! Be afraid, Alaric. Be very afraid. We certainly are for him, but we’re taking the recent news about Matt Davis’ arrival on “The Originals” later this season for a guest role as some sort of hope that he’ll find a way to get through this stuff in one piece.
