‘The Vampire Diaries’ series finale date officially set; should Nina Dobrev return?
Today, The CW finally opted to make it official: They will be putting their final nail in the coffin of “The Vampire Diaries” before we officially get to the start of spring.
The series finale from executive producers Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec will come on Friday, March 10 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern, which is a little earlier than any other season of the show to date. Maybe there are some out there who are bummed by such an early end to a show that no one wants to see end, but we know that they will give it a huge send off. As a matter of fact, we may be willing to go so far as to say that ending the show in March is a better time for a celebration than ending in May.
Why is that? Well, much of it comes down to ensuring that this series gets the biggest goodbye that it possibly can, and if you put it on the air during May, there’s a good chance that all of the headlines will be swallowed up by other shows with higher ratings and more press coverage at this point in their run. Also May is sweeps and typically when everyone is airing their finales and big episodes, so it’s easy to get lost in the quagmire.
The biggest question out there for “The Vampire Diaries” is whether or Nina Dobrev, originally the show’s star for the first six seasons, will return in some capacity for the series finale. Plec and Dobrev both have said over the years that it is something that could happen, and Nina did show a willingness to record audio for the series at the end of last season. We have a feeling that provided the schedules align, the powers-that-be will figure out a way to make this happen. With that, kudos to the show for finding a way to persevere since her departure; we’ve found season 8 so far to be the right mixture of succinctness and insanity, with a number of interesting twists and character developments that suggests that many of our characters (except for Damon and Enzo at present) are on the road to a happier future.
