‘Supergirl’ season 2, episode 6 review: Alex tells Kara about Maggie; Guardian is born
On tonight’s new episode of “Supergirl,” the main enemy was … global warming? We gotta admit that there were a few seconds during this episode at first where the thought entered our mind.
Instead, the enemy this time around was something a little more akin to the Blob: An infectious creature that managed to become more and more powerful over time based on some of the life force that it sapped up. There were certainly some cool effects that came from it, but at the same time this did nothing to change up our principal criticism of the season so far: None of the main villains have been particularly interesting or exciting. Sure, they are powerful, but where are the personalities?
After Infection Man (as we like to call him) started to drain Kara of some of her power, she started to realize that he was a problem, so much so that it could get in the way of her other recent activities: Training Mon-El and-or learning to have fun in the way that he does. Unfortunately for the two of them, much of their good will came to an end when she realized that he was working as hired muscle for people to get what they want.
Birth of the Guardian – We were very much excited to see him don a costume, but it actually took a little longer than we expected to get to this point (think around 24 minutes into the episode). He wanted to help after hearing about what happened to Kara at Infection Man’s hands, to the point where he was alienating Winn and making demands to him. That speech Winn gave to him over trying to rush the costume may be one of our favorite Jeremy Jordan moments of the entire show to date.
After Infection Man drained both Kara and James to the point that he became overtaken by some enlarged monstrosity, it became clear that something needed to happen. Therefore, Winn finished the suit, and he prepared to get ready to get out and fight — without Kara knowing about it. While this happened, Alex went to Mon-El, hoping that he would get out there and fight.
The showdown – Eventually, Infection Man was taken out thanks to a multi-pronged approach. Basically, we saw Guardian and Mon-El team up in order to distract the monster long enough so that Supergirl could throw more energy in his face than he could possibly handle. Yeah, pretty predictable finish, no?
Following the fight James and Winn determined that they wanted to keep fighting out in the field; not only that, but they continued to keep it a secret “until they get a handle on it.” Yeah, that’s going to end well, isn’t it?
Alex comes out – Following last week’s revelation that she had feelings for Maggie, she had to determine the right way in order to take her advice and come out to Kara. She was her family, and of course, it makes sense that she would try to forge some sort of connection between her and her sister over it. After all, this could be a great bonding for them!
Unfortunately, it seemed like Alex found herself shutting down in the middle of her first conversation with Kara, which wasn’t really a situation where either one of them did anything wrong. It’s just a delicate subject, and the two of them had a hard time knowing how to handle taking on a subject like this with no real experience doing so. Eventually, they had another conversation, and Kara realized that her mistake was never spending a whole lot of time in her life to consider some of her feelings. Eventually, the two created a nice, warm environment where Kara was able to ask questions and hear her out.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem as though Alex has found true love just yet. After kissing Maggie and revealing to her that she has feelings, Maggie made it clear that she’s not interested in being with her right now given that they’re at very different places in their lives. After getting heartbroken Alex wanted to shut herself off from the world, but Kara wouldn’t let that happen. (Speaking of great performances, how amazing was Chyler Leigh in this final scene with Melissa Benoist?)
The Martian Manhunter twist – After the attack by Infection Man, J’onn needed a transfusion. Unfortunately, what he doesn’t realize is that the blood that he has now belongs to Miss Martian … who is actually not a Green Martian at all.
As for your other cliffhanger, Mon-El was taken by Cadmus! That can’t end well…
Overall – The villain for the most part was sort of a dud, especially sense the whole environmental-activism part of the message was a little lost in the shuffle. Still, the character stuff this week was all fantastic in between Alex’s confessions and James and Winn forming a partnership in their own unique way. Grade: B+.
