Ratings: Halloween clobbers ‘Supergirl,’ ‘Gotham,’ ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ but ‘Scorpion’ increases
Halloween is not a great night for television — actually, let’s put it this way: It’s a terrible night for television. We have no idea why the majority of primetime networks ever decided in the first place that putting themselves in competition with trick-or-treaters was going to be a good idea, especially in the 8:00 p.m. “family hour” time slot that serves as a starting-off point for the rest of the night.
Probably the show that took the hardest fall was “Supergirl,” which sunk all the way down to a 0.6 rating. Remember for a minute that this was a show that aired on CBS just one year ago, and had CW executives saying that they wanted it to be the #2 show on the network behind “The Flash.” That’s not great. Still, it’s probably a one-time aberration because of the holiday, so we’re not going to blame some other shows like “The Voice” (2.0), “Dancing with the Stars” (1.5), “Kevin Can Wait” (1.4), or “Gotham” (0.9) for sinking given the competition. The real losers here are the network executives who thought for whatever reason that it’d be smart to program new episodes up against a huge holiday event that happens EVERY YEAR and sucks the TV watching audience out into the streets to loot candy.
The worst bit of irony here is that “Lucifer,” a show about the very devil himself, ended up generating just a 0.9 rating in the demo. Isn’t this the perfect show for October 31?
Hey, at least one show improved! That show was “Scorpion,” which saw its own numbers rise up to a 1.4 rating. It had the luxury of airing a little bit later in the night, therefore allowing itself to get some parents watching while their kids were off somewhere crashing form their sugar highs. Sadly, the gains didn’t carry over to “Timeless.” It’s a great show, but for whatever reason it’s only getting a 1.1 rating in its first season. That’s got us fairly worried about the future.
Tonight, there are some big ratings winners airing such as “This Is Us” and “NCIS” — be prepared for a bounce-back!
