NBC’s ‘The Voice’ switching to real-time voting for Live Playoffs
“The Voice” is a show that especially has tried to stay at the forefront of new and interesting trends when it comes to voting techniques, and it’s with that in mind that we have to say we’re not altogether shocked by what NBC is doing for next week’s Live Playoffs.
Basically, the way in which this is working is that during the show starting on Monday, November 7, voting will be available both on the show’s app and on Twitter in real time. Two of the artists advancing from each team will be chosen through this, while the coach will select the third. More details will probably be made available as we get closer to the show.
What we like about the idea is that it makes the show into more appointment-viewing for many people. We do live in a world where so much that happens is in the now as opposed to something you have to wait for. We hate the move for people on the West Coast, since it’s completely stupid to tell that entire part of the country, including the same state that you’re filming in in California, to just follow along on Twitter since they can’t actually watch the show. If all of the country was in a similar time zone or “The Voice” was airing at 5:00 p.m. on the West Coast, that’d be a very different situation. As it is, this seems to really penalize the artists from that part of the country who miss out on some love from local connections.
Ultimately, we think NBC gets enough of this real-time mileage out of the #VoiceSave that they don’t quite need this, but we also don’t think for sure that this is a permanent inclusion into the show. It may just be the network’s way of compensating for the fact that there is no show on November 8 due to the election.
