‘Lucifer’ season 2 officially receives 22-episode full season
While it typically is assumed that shows in their second season already have a full-season order going into them, it’s not necessarily guaranteed. This is something that changes sometimes for shows that premiere at midseason for their first go-around, and networks aren’t entirely confident yet that they have the audience to justify a full order of 22.
One of the best cases of this is “Lucifer,” but there’s some good news coming out today as the Tom Ellis and Lauren German-led series now has that full-season order after a few weeks on the air. This is a testament somewhat to the show’s popularity, but also probably at the same time Fox’s own failures to develop hit series for this season. “Lucifer” isn’t exactly drawing wonderful numbers, but the majority of their own shows aside from “Empire” and “Lethal Weapon” are faring even worse.
In a statement, Fox Broadcasting president David Madden said the following about the pickup:
“Lucifer continues to deliver, with great blasts of dark humor and ambitious storytelling. The show has turned out to be a true wicked pleasure, the perfect companion to Gotham, and we couldn’t be more pleased to order these nine additional episodes … We’d like to thank Tom, Lauren and the entire cast, who have imbued these characters with charm, humor and a great deal of humanity. Our thanks also go out to the production crew — Jerry, Len, Jonathan, Joe and Ildy — who, week-in and week-out, deliver a stellar show. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for the rest of the season.”
Given that this is a really fun show, and one that is somewhat missing in a TV landscape that takes itself far too seriously, we’re glad to see it staying put for a while longer. Also, it and “Gotham” make for a good combination on the night.
Now, let’s turn this over to you! Let us know what you think about the pickup in the comments. (Photo: Fox.)
