HBO’s ‘Divorce’ episode 5 preview: Robert, Francis lawyer up
Through four episodes, “Divorce” has followed a pretty straightforward trajectory, one where we’ve effectively seen things go from being bad to worse over a slow period of time. At first, we thought we were going to see these characters try to make things better in terms of their broken relationship. However, over time we’ve seen them go to separate rooms, attend couples counseling, and eventually enter mediation in order to ensure that the split is done as amicably as possible.
However, moving into next week’s new episode entitled “Gustav,” we are going to be seeing things get heated courtesy of divorce attorneys. They’re entering the fray, and after that we figure all bets are off and things could get nasty.
Synopsis – “Frances (Sarah Jessica Parker) discovers that Robert (Thomas Haden Church) has hired a lawyer, and responds in kind. Frances looks to connect with an influential artist. Robert pitches Nick (Tracy Letts) a can’t-miss investment opportunity.”
When it comes to Robert’s “investment opportunity,” we have a feeling that this could come as a last-ditch effort to try to repair some things financially after learning tonight that he is effectively broke. At the moment, this certainly looks like a show that’s going to be living up to its name; one of the challenges that could come with that, though, is what happens in the event that the divorce is eventually finalized. Much of the engagement from watching this show comes via the dynamic between Robert and Francis. If they no longer have a reason to speak to each other often, will that still happen? If it doesn’t the show could run out of steam on a rather fast basis.
