‘The Walking Dead’ season 7: Comic writer explains sad Glenn decision
The majority of the internet is still reeling in one way or the other due to what happened to Glenn on the season premiere of “The Walking Dead,” and it’s pretty darn easy to understand why. While in some ways it may have been easy to predict that he was going to be one of the people to die (we also lost Abraham), that doesn’t make it any less easy. There were also many people out there who wanted to hope that Glenn would live past Negan’s arrival, thinking that the show may try to change things up from the comics as they have done so much times in the past.
However, in the mind of comic creator Robert Kirkman, losing Glenn here was something that felt absolutely necessary. In speaking on this further per Entertainment Weekly, he had the following message to pass along:
“It’s just that there’s a lot of material that comes from Glenn’s death in the comics … And while we do try to change things up to keep things interesting for the audience, and for me, this is one that there’s so much that comes from Rick, there’s so much with Negan, because that character is someone that he killed, and definitely Maggie is someone that kind of gets put on the trajectory that affects a great number of stories and a great number of characters moving forward. So it was kind of essential that that part of the scene at least remained intact, unfortunately.”
Kirkman admits that he and the team thought of other options, but we do agree with the notion that killing off Glenn here does give the show the widest array of story possibilities, and his death does impact the largest group of people. He’s been around since the very beginning, he has a relationship, and he was even expecting a child.
