Who from ‘Black Mirror’ was offered ‘Doctor Who’ writing gig?
If there are two science fiction series already that have done a rather-good job of taking the world by storm, it is “Black Mirror” and “Doctor Who.” One of them just premiered with their latest season on Friday on Netflix, and it continues to be as weird and innovative as you’d hope. As for “Doctor Who,” let’s just say that you’ll be waiting for a while to see the show air with some new episodes early next year — though the spin-off show entitled “Class” is currently airing over on BBC Three.
As it turns out, there was at one point an opportunity for the different properties to be on some sort of collision course. Speaking per The Independent, “Black Mirror” co-creator Charlie Brooker confirmed that he was offered a chance at one point to write an episode, and while he was able to do it at the time, he’d love to take it on again:
“I was approached for Doctor Who and I just didn’t have time … It was really annoying. I was really busy and they haven’t asked me again since … It was a bit like the home office asking you to do something.”
Given the popularity of “Black Mirror” these days, we have a feeling that Brooker will be asked again at some point in the future, and if he has the time, maybe the parties will be able to figure it out? The idea of this collaboration on the surface is easily enough to make minds melt with joy and happiness.
“Doctor Who” is certainly a show that has welcomed many great writers over time — Steven Moffat is the current showrunner, with Chris Chibnall taking over following season 10 and next year’s Christmas Special.
