‘Supergirl’ season 2: When should Calista Flockhart return as Cat Grant?

Cat Grant

Monday night’s “Supergirl” had a few surprising reveals in it (take, for example, the promotion of James Olsen), but there was one other event that was fairly easy to anticipate: The departure of Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant.

From the moment the CBS show migrated over to The CW, it felt clear it would be hard to keep Flockhart on board on a regular basis. She’s based out of Los Angeles, and the show films in Vancouver. Having her willing to do guest spots seems almost like a victory in itself. Cat was written out so that the character could pursue other adventures, feeling as though she’d done enough with CatCo to leave satisfied with her achievements. On paper, it is certainly easy to see where she is coming from, but that doesn’t do much to make the departure any easier for fans of the character.

Admittedly, we’ll admit that we weren’t the biggest Cat fan in the early going just because of the obvious Meryl Streep – “The Devil Wars Prada” comparisons; yet, over time she established herself as a dynamic personality with her own quirks, and her softer side was incredibly endearing. She was perhaps at her best in these first two episodes of the season, which makes it even harder now to imagine her departing the show.

So could Cat return to the show this season? While Flockhart doesn’t have any further episodes booked as far as we’re aware for now, we do see it happening depending on her availability and other story concerns. We relate it almost now to Henry Allen on “The Flash,” someone who can show up for a powerful scene here or there. Given that Kara is working now directly for Snapper Carr and Cat’s no longer running the day-to-day operations, there’s no reason to see her regularly; yet, the name of the company’s probably not changing, so we figure that she’s going to want to check on things here and there to ensure that it doesn’t burn to the ground in her absence.
