‘Saturday Night Live’ preview: Expectations for Emily Blunt, Bruno Bars, and Donald Trump material galore

SNL -

Just how much is “Saturday Night Live” getting ready to milk the Presidential election for all they can? Well, let’s just say that NBC is releasing yet another preview promising that the battle of the ages is coming — again — for Hillary Clinton versus Donald Trump on their show.

We would be shocked if the opening sketch tonight is anything other than another debate piece featuring Alec Baldwin as Trump up against Kate McKinnon as Hillary — you don’t put out a promo like that otherwise. The question we have going into this is if you are going to do roughly the same thing as following the first debate, or if you are going to find a way to radically change it up using some of the other headlines that have come out since the debate.

The thing you gotta remember going into this show is just how fast the news cycle seems to work now. The most recent debate featuring these candidates feels now like an eternity ago, and while “SNL” was able to jump rather quickly on the Billy Bush conversation controversy, many other late-night shows have had a chance now to milk the debate. There wasn’t any sort of late-breaking headline on Friday that had us thinking that the show was going to be able to milk that like nobody else’s business.

As for host Emily Blunt, she’s probably going to be overshadowed at times in the way that Margot Robbie was in the premiere, but at the same time we get the sense that she’s funny, capable, and ready to give doing this show a show. Odds are, she’ll do a decent job. Our hope is that former host Bruno Mars also comes in and makes an appearance in a sketch or two.
