‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13, episode 4 review: Are Meredith and Riggs done? Amelia, Owen’s decision
Life’s not easy for Dr. Alex Karev at present on “Grey’s Anatomy.” His personal life fell apart, he could face jail time over assaulting DeLuca, and his professional career is in shambles. The good news is that he still has a job within the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, but the bad news is that he’s at a clinic, where there are many people ready and willing to prey on him for his mistakes. He certainly didn’t make matters easier on himself by acting like it was a lesser job at times.
What we did see from him was an effective team-up with Dr. Webber in order to get a young woman turned around after she became addicted to IV treatments.
On the Meredith / Riggs front this week, some significant tension came out of their relationship following questions as to whether or not he chose to follow Meredith’s actions at the hospital because of their romance. Not only did he deny that, but at the same time he got angry over it, saying that his job meant significantly more to him than just worrying about compromising his status as a doctor. This was the bad-news romantic couple of the episode, given that Meredith seems ready to cut things off out of fear that her job will be compromised by her feelings.
While these two figured things out at work, April and Jackson tried to figure things out at home. They finally started to look towards their future after co-habitating for a little while after she gave birth. It made some sense, given that they were not actually together romantically and, in Jackson’s own words, he was “walking on eggshells” in his own home. They talked about her moving out, but Jackson said that he didn’t want that … at least for now. We’ll see where this goes.
Let’s finally finish things off by discussing Amelia and Owen, who were starting to see the wheels come off slightly from their honeymoon period. Yet, coming down from that joy allowed the two of them to become a little bit more real and vulnerable with each other in terms of their history. This will get them to a deeper place in the end, even if it is difficult to talk about pass trauma. Now, they’re looking towards having kids. Joy! We know that he’s been waiting for that moment for quite some time.
Grade: B. For much of the episode, it felt like we were watching a series of events that didn’t really mean a whole lot in the long-term. Luckily, the past ten minutes started to turn things around, delivering a nice mixture of drama and entertainment.
Next week – Get ready for some new developments when it comes to Owen and Amelia. Head over here to read up about it now.
