‘Murder in the First’ canceled by TNT; season 4 hopes dim
As someone who picked up “Murder in the First” a little late and was enjoying some of what the TNT series was bringing to the table, this news does sadden us.
Per a report from Deadline, the series starring Taye Diggs and Kathleen Robertson, is over after three years on the air. We’d love to see it continue, but that’s typically rare for canceled cable shows. While this was not a ratings monster by any means, we didn’t necessarily think the numbers here were terrible in comparison to some of the other scripted shows in the genre on cable. We also hoped that there would be enough momentum with the show getting a season high in the finale to get it a season 4. TNT has been moving away from the crime TV genre as of late; “Rizzoli & Isles” aired its series finale earlier this summer.
With this cancellation in mind, we’re ultimately going to have to fashion some of our own endings for this character, with Terry and Hildy leading the way. We rooted especially during the third season for the two characters to be together, and we’re going to imagine that they have some sort of future after all they’ve been through — even if we haven’t had an opportunity to see most of it.
One thing that we hope is that moving forward, cable networks do continue in one way or another to come up with crime shows that are more in the anthology format as opposed to the standard procedurals that have been around for generations. While some of those shows are entertaining, you become so much more invested seeing characters and cases play out over a lengthy period of time.
