‘Shark Tank’ video: Will Wally Amos become ‘famous’ again with The Cookie Kahuna?
The story of The Cookie Kahuna on Friday night’s new episode of “Shark Tank” is, at least for our reckoning, one of the most fascinating stories we’ve seen explored on the series in some time. What you are basically looking at here is a product with decades of history behind it already, albeit from a very different name.
Odds are, if you see the name Wally Amos associated with cookies, a certain brand name is coming to mind. Amos is a former talent agent who eventually went on to create a nationwide sensation with the Famous Amos cookie brand. However, he hasn’t been affiliated with that company in some time. He’s gone on to do some other ventures (including appearing on “The Office” at one point), and now he’s got a new company based out of Hawaii advertising that this is the original recipe that he had used in the brand so many years ago.
Honestly, the original Famous Amos cookies are a little before our time; by the time we would’ve first tried the cookies, it would have been the early nineties and Amos was gone from the company by then. We cannot speak to the nostalgia of those cookies, or what will make The Cookie Kahuna appealing to the Sharks on that level.
The reality here is that grocery items these days are an incredibly hard sell, and given all of the recent health crazes, that is probably tenfold for snack items like cookies. Having Wally Amos as the face of the brand is a huge selling point, though, and we could easily see him making a ton of money off of this show. The biggest thing we wonder in the long-term is if the Sharks see this as something with long-term viability, given that the original Famous Amos cookies were a bit of a trend.
