‘Chicago PD’ season 4, episode 4 review: Kevin Atwater in the spotlight
Last time on “Chicago PD” we had an episode that was all about Trudy, and as much as we loved that (Amy Morton was fantastic), tonight we are going to be shifting the focus to another cast member that doesn’t always get a lot of time in the spotlight: Kevin Atwater. Also we recently interviewed Morton about her big episode, and you can check that out at the link here.
Of all the people to take relationship advice from on this show, the last person on your list should be Ruzek after how badly he botched his relationship with Burgess and how he is still completely clueless as to why she left him. Luckily, Lindsay knows what his advice on romance is worth, so when he starts telling her that she and Halstead should have some sort of plan now that they are living together, she’s quick to dismiss it. He tries to say that he thinks she’s avoiding going home to Halstead now that she’s been taking extra shifts at work (remember they have only been living together for 4 days) and she assures him that it’s just so that they can pay their mortgage down quickly.
We haven’t had a good Atwater story in a while (you can check out our recent interview with LaRoyce Hawkins at the link here), but tonight he was back in the spotlight with the case of the week. When a gang war heats up, Kevin’s younger brother, Jordan, is caught with some questionable kids, so Burgess gets him into her protection until this all cools down. When Kevin gets home he listens to what Jordan has to say and knowing what a good kid he is, Kevin decides to move past it without much fuss.
We weren’t sure Mouse was going to be gone this fast, but here we are. There’s a new girl (Jenny) working in his old job and so far she doesn’t fit in with our team – she’s a little strange, a bit of a know-it-all and she’s rubbing everyone the wrong way, that is until Voight whispers in her ear that all the allegations she’s heard about him are true. Now there’s nothing but pure terror for Jenny.
We have to say that we are loving the spotlight episodes on some of these characters we don’t know a lot about, but want to know better. Just putting this out into the universe to see what happens – we haven’t had a good Olinsky episode in a long time and would love to see one soon, so if the “Chicago PD” gods are listening (yeah we are talking to you Dick Wolf), maybe throw us a bone? Episode grade: B
In case you missed it: We have an exclusive CarterMatt interview with Jon Seda at the link here.

Seriously? No mouse? All we got was maybe he’ll join the army again and then he’s gone? No goodbye? WTF!!!! He had the best storyline when he was introduced to the show and they didn’t even bother to write him off he just disappears without a word. The cutest comic relief to such a serious show and his storyline isn’t even tied up in any way? Is this a joke?
Do they think the audience is stupid and will assume Mouse left without anyone reacting? Natasha was the secretary for half a second and got a huge ending murder story arc…Mouse has been there for 3 seasons and nada!
NBC makes the Chicago shows seem like a big beloved family but it just doesn’t add up with their above and beyond policy to let Mouse go so oddly unremarked. He was supposedly Halsteads best friend and savior from war but is not even mentioned after saying he THINKS about going back …..did I miss an episode ?????! What’s going on??!!
Makes you Wonder if it was a personal issue or conflict with the network…

We all missed an episode! They changed the order. Last week’s episode was supposed to be episode 5 and the next one was supposed to be episode 3. So hopefully we will get some kind of closure too the mouse story, even though it would be weird to have already seen his replacement and only then see a wrap up of his story and his departure. I really hope it’ll make sense! PD writets, I’m looking at you. No idea why you pulled this switcheroo but PLEASE have it make sense and not be a Chicago, back to the Future situation.

I was feeling the same thing – I loved Mouse! Not that I won’t learn to love the new girl, but I want a proper goodbye.

Me too! He definitely deserves a proper goodbye, he was around for quite some time. Not to mention his rejoining the army could potentially cause some Jay-angst and open the door for Linstead really being there for each other, beyond asking “are you OK” . This season it seems like the writers put them in a place where they are truly in love, not just lusting after each other. If this is so, then I want to SEE it: Comforting, intimacy, closeness, the works. The deleted scene they released today is a huge step in that direction as it shows them really communicating, for a change (no more “I”m fine”?).
Having said all that, sadly CPD writers are not known for following up on stories all the way, so who knows. Maybe the talks Mouse had with Jay and Voight in 402 are everything we will get in terms of a sendoff? Hope to be proven wrong about this.

Jay is a bit better with communicating then Lindsay, so my hope is that more of their love relationship will come out now that they are living together. He will hopefully push her out of her comfort zone to open up more. I am enjoying seeing some of the back ground players like Kevin and Trudy getting some spotlight time tho. Want to see an Olinsky episode – it’s been a while.
