‘Dancing with the Stars 23’ postmortem: Why Babyface, Vanilla Ice were eliminated
Going into last night’s “Dancing with the Stars” double-elimination, we had a sentiment akin to what we often do before these events: It’s probably going to be a bloodletting where some potential favorite goes home and everyone burns Twitter to the ground. Yet, that didn’t happen, and you can argue instead that what did was a case of two Stars going home who most deserved to be shown the door. We can’t speak for them is people, so squelch the angry mom in advance.
Still, this postmortem article series (we do one every week) is all about picking apart what happened, and of course we must do the same thing here.
Babyface and Allison Holker – For the singer otherwise known as Kenneth Edmonds, you do not have to look any further than Monday’s scores for evidence. 18 was the lowest score on the leaderboard by three points, and his recent history was a trajectory you rarely see on this show: Downward. He went from receiving 7’s and 8’s to 6’s in his final performances, and for some reason, he just wasn’t improving in the way that Stars often do on this show. At present, what we hope is that he will be performing at some point before the end of the season. He showed that he does have some moves (especially in the slower dances), but singing is his true gift.
Vanilla Ice and Witney Carson – In some way, maybe Vanilla and Babyface had a similar problem in that their musical and dance commitments at times colliding with one another. “The “Ice, Ice, Baby” performer was traveling so much during the competition that it seemingly impeded on his rehearsal time, and anytime you are appearing on this you want to have every second you can. Since neither he nor Vanilla Ice are culturally relevant in 2016, they needed to work overtime in order to cultivate new fans while satisfying the ones they already had.
