‘Arrow’ season 5 premiere sneak peek: Oliver’s back to his ruthless ways

Arrow -

Arrow” season 5 comes aboard The CW tonight at 8:00 p.m. Eastern, and this is not going to be a kinder, gentler version of the show — though we’re not quite sure how many people expected that in the first place. The Oliver Queen you will see over the course of the premiere is more akin to the one from the first two seasons: Ruthless, unforgiving, and towing the line between killing and “mortally wounding” people. It’s exciting, but it should definitely make you afraid if you’re a bad guy … or even a good guy, for that matter.

The sneak peek below appears to be coming from before Oliver decides to open up the Unofficial Green Arrow Academy for Training Vigilantes, since he is not particularly receptive to the idea of Wild Dog in the field. Heck, he pulls a Skyrim on him and fires off an arrow to the knee at the end of the clip. It’s awesome, at least for us as a viewer. For Wild Dog, it probably sucks and it’s remarkable that he wants to train with this guy in the first place.

Wild Dog is one of three new trainees for Oliver in the early going this season, as you can also add both Curtis Holt and Evelyn Sharp to the list. Oliver may not want to admit he needs help, but the guy’s now the Mayor of Star City! Sooner or later, people are going to wonder why the Mayor keeps passing out from exhaustion in his office. (We don’t know if that’s going to happen, but we’d probably die of laughter if it does. It’d certainly makes sense.)

While this preview may be short, it further creates the impression in our mind that we’re heading back in the direction of the “Arrow” we love — one that focuses on the crime-fighting, and still gives you enough of the heart and the emotion to satisfy. Restraint is not easy in a show about superheroes, but it’s necessary both on a micro and macro level.
