‘Saturday Night Live’ music: The Weeknd performs ‘Starboy,’ ‘False Alarm’

SNL -For the season premiere of “Saturday Night Live,” we got a chance to see not only some of the best comedy we’ve seen in some time for the season premiere; we also had a performance from someone still at the top of his game musically in The Weeknd. we’re not going to say that we listen to him on a regular basis, but we understand that he’s a talented guy and his stage presence in particular has improved pretty dramatically over the course of the past several years.

Tonight, he came out before weekend update with a new performance of “Starboy.” How was it? For the most part, we’d say it was true to form, well-sung, and entertaining. Admittedly we couldn’t understand much of the lyrics, but this is no the first time we’ve said that on “SNL.” We’re also glad that afterwards, he reprised the whole “Weeknd Update” bit to remind everyone that he cut his hair. He’s a pretty subdued guy, and that is probably why this works.

Stay tuned for more on the second performance…

Performance #2 – This one was “False Alarm,” and for us it may have been a little too manic and loud. There was definitely a lot of energy and we give him credit for that, but at the same time the bright lights and the thumping beat at some points felt like a distraction. As we said, we cannot really speak for fans, but we think that the first performance likely played better to the overall crowd.
