‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13, episode 2 review: Everyone’s coming to dinner
On “Grey’s Anatomy,” almost nothing is sacred, and that includes casual dinner parties. How else do you explain Meredith’s attempts to railroad any attempt Maggie made at getting in a relationship with Nathan Riggs?
While we sympathize with Ellen Pompeo’s character more often than not, there are occasions in which Meredith can be rather cruel. Allowing Maggie to continue this ruse of trying to win over Riggs when she has little to no chance is one of them. He eventually did reject Maggie later on in the episode, saying that he’s “not ready to date anyone.” That may be adding insult to injury once she learns what is really going on here at the moment.
Speaking of characters we have some sympathy for in spite of their circumstances, we’re looking at Alex. What he did he did as a result of anger, and it was pretty terrible. Yet, you see him consoling a kid in need despite his medical mistakes and you want to root for him more. You see his heart. Sometimes he’s a little too much like an attack dog, but he has the heart of a puppy and is a guy who just wants to figure his life out. He’s unfortunately facing a felony, and he’s doing what he can to try to win back Jo — even though it’s not easy.
For now, Alex is moving on to the clinic, which is a nice alternative we suppose to being fired.
Other stories – Over the episode we had April trying to come to terms with Baby Harriet leaving the hospital with Jackson while she recovers, while Amelia is making it her mission to try and bring Riggs and Owen back together as friends.
Before the season we heard frequently from Shonda Rhimes that we were focusing more on the original characters, and we have to say that it’s working out. Through two episodes, “Grey’s Anatomy” has delivered the goods this season. It’s emotional, addictive, hopeful at times, and heartbreaking at others. While things have changed, we firmly believe that this is much of the soul of the show that we once fell in love with.
