‘Empire’ season 3, episode 2 review: Another sad twist for Andre
At the moment, we certainly feel for Andre on “Empire,” and for a pretty darn good reason: Just think about all of the terrible stuff that has happened over the course of the past week with him. He lost Rhonda, and in turn he questioned his faith and everything that he stood for previously.
On tonight’s new episode, he ran into a buzzsaw that was a completely different but still unfortunate thing happening all around the country to this day: Racial profiling. He was arrested by police officers outside of his own house, where he was accused of burglarizing his own place. This was heartbreaking, with his scene with Cookie serving as a firm second place in the “sad moments” department.
On a slightly happier note, there could be some good news for Cookie Lyon in the future as she is starting to get closer already to Angelo Dubois. It’s nice to have Taye Diggs on the show, mostly because we do consider him to be so magnetic and a rather wonderful person to watch.
Ultimately, we’re glad that “Empire” is still taking risks and trying to tell an extremely bold story full of surprising twists. Not all of them may not be things that we want to see happen to the character, but we’re pleased to see that they are not resting on their laurels — at least for now. The biggest fear we’ve got right now is that in the midst of everything that is going on right now with Andre, we could see Hakeem and Jamal lost somewhat in the shuffle. Right now, we don’t see either of their stories as particularly interesting, even if we do understand why Jamal is struggling to perform right now in the wake of his shooting. He’s still trying to uncover the best use for his talent in the wake of what happened. Grade: B.
