Why isn’t ‘Scandal’ season 6 new tonight on ABC?

If you are turning on the television to ABC tonight and not seeing “Scandal,” you may be slightly confused. After all, the Shonda Rhimes series has followed new episodes of “Grey’s Anatomy” for years, and #TGIT has turned into a massive television event. It’s crazy, but that is in turn a big part of the fun.

Ultimately, the show is not new tonight because of Kerry Washington’s pregnancy, which has caused some shifts to the season 6 production cycle. We’re looking at a shorter season, and there was no way to premiere the season tonight without there being a huge hiatus at some point in the weeks ahead. It made sense for ABC to instead give this timeslot to “Notorious,” and wait for “Scandal” until the new year.

If you are a diehard Gladiator, just know this: There is not any direct correlation between the show being off the air tonight and also it being in ratings jeopardy. ABC values the show, and we don’t foresee it going anywhere in the near future provided that fans continue to enjoy and talk about it. The only real question we wonder is if there will be a little bit of concern about the show having such a long layoff, and if fans will still continue to watch. Ultimately, we feel like it’ll work out.
