NBC’s ‘The Voice’ video: ‘One Voice’ singer Billy Gilman auditions
For those of you who like “The Voice” with a “where are they now?” component to it, odds are that you are especially going to appreciate the sneak peek below!
In this audition, you can see former country child star Billy Gilman perform a wonderful rendition of Adele’s “When We Were Young.” It’s a very poetic song choice for Gilman, who first had a hit single with “One Voice” all the way back when he was 11 years old. He’s obviously moved on from that now, and has a very different sound that he’s trying to bring to the table. There was no doubt in our mind that he’d get all four coaches to turn around, and we’re not shocked at all that both Blake Shelton and Miley Cyrus are familiar with who he is. Billy even opened for Billy Ray Cyrus at one point, according to Miley.
As for who is the right coach for him, to us it doesn’t make any sense to choose Blake since he’s pivoting away from country to a certain extent here with a more mainstream hit. Adam probably can connect with him on on a mentor level as a guy who’s worked hard to carve his own path, but Miley has a really interesting point here. She’s someone who made a bold decision to pivot in her career from being a teen pop artist into someone who now makes deliberate choices and caters to more of an adult audience. She has a little bit of knowledge of what it’s like to be young and feel that sort of weight on your shoulders.
No matter who Billy chooses, it’s cool to see him on the show. If you were to be mad at him for having some sort of past fame, you’d also have to be angry at other past contestants like Tony Lucca and Alisan Porter. What’s the point if they’ve had some past success? This is a show about the now.
