‘Black Sails’ star Toby Stephens navigates over to ‘Lost in Space’ reboot
With “Black Sails” coming to an end on Starz, Toby Stephens has opted to set sail for another major TV adventure. This time around, he’s going from the high seas to outer space.
Sources confirm that the actor is officially set for the Netflix remake of “Lost in Space,” and will be playing the all-important role of John Robinson, the family patriarch at the center of the whole journey. This is the second major casting that the streaming provider has announced; “Falling Skies” alum Taylor Russell was already confirmed to be playing the part of John’s daughter Judy.
We are not entirely sure just yet how closely this new “Lost in Space” will follow either the original series or the move version of that; our sentiment first and foremost is that it will be adapting for modern audiences, and have a spirit and imagination that is solely its own while also taking the essence of the original and keeping that in mind. There’ll probably be some humor, and we’d be shocked if Netflix pushed the series far away from catering to a family audience. Given that this show is about a family, doesn’t it seem right to go in that direction?
As for Stephens’ casting, we think it’s the perfect thing to shake things up after years of playing Flint on the pirate drama — we do also find it funny that this announcement is coming a day after Talk Like a Pirate Day. Just imagine the field day of pirate puns we’d be including (“Arrr you ready for some new casting news?”) if it had been announced then.
The most unfortunate thing when it comes to this series is simply how long we’re going to have to wait for it. At present, there is no indication that new episodes are going to air before 2018.
