‘Game of Thrones’ prequel (or anything else) still up in the air
There’s clearly a lot of talk coming out after the Emmys about “Game of Thrones,” and for good reason given that the series really dominated the show. while it didn’t win in some of the acting fields, it won the Drama Series prize coupled with a number of other trophies over the course of the night.
So, with that, of course there are people aplenty starting to think about the series’ future and what that may be. There are two more seasons left here, but following that there’s a good chance HBO will want a spin-off. All we can say for now is that whether it’s a prequel or something otherwise, the network would need a new creative team. Per Entertainment Weekly, co-creator David Benioff had the following to say:
“You might want to ask George about that … It’s a great world that George created. I think it’s a very rich world, and I’m sure there will be other series set in Westeros, but for us, this is it. That’s really a question for George.”
Martin added that there are of course several other stories out there on Westeros that could be adapted in some way, but for him the focus remains primarily on the next two books of A Song of Ice and Fire, and of course also seeing the HBO show at present end.
We do certainly think that the network is going to play around in the “Game of Thrones” universe in some way moving forward, but they may start to look at this topic more in 2017. Right now, it is probably a little early and nobody wants to get too far ahead of themselves.
