Emmys 2016: Jimmy Kimmel opens with ‘The People v. OJ Simpson’ spoof, Jeb Bush cameo
There are many reasons to be excited about the Emmys, but one of the biggest ones always is getting a chance to see how the host pulls off an epic opening. Hopefully for Jimmy Kimmel, we’re going to see something particularly notable tonight.
The show began on Sunday with a pretty funny tribute to “The People v. OJ Simpson,” as Kimmel found himself in a famous white Bronco before he was later picked up by Phil and the gang from “Modern Family.” From here, things only proceeded to get weird courtesy of a “Carpool Karaoke” bit, and then also a “Veep” segment involving Selina Meyer and then also Jeb Bush as a limo driver. The only bummer is that the show could’ve gone so much darker with Jimmy almost killing off Ryan Seacrest with one of the dragons from “Game of Thrones.” Why not have some more fun with that?
As for Jimmy’s opening monologue, we’d say that it was for the most part a home run. There were some more jokes made about OJ, he handed Jeffrey Tambor an Emmy since he figured he would win, and he completely ripped Maggie Smith in a brilliant series of jokes about her being absent. Of course, there were also Donald Trump, as he blamed Mark Burnett (creator of “The Apprentice” franchise) for allowing this to happen in the first place. Overall, we’d say that this was a strong start to the show, even if it was not perfect.
Of course, we want to hear from you how you think Jimmy did in his opening! Later on, you can certainly expand that to “the entirety of the show.”
