‘Ballers’ season 2, episode 8 review: The good and bad news with Travis’ draft day

BallersAt the end of the last new episode of “Ballers,” we saw Spencer Strasmore be hit with one of the biggest setbacks of his entire career, whether it be on or off the field. He lost his job at ASM thanks to his past, and for most of tonight, we saw the character in general try to pick himself up and figure out what he wants to do next. At the top of the priority list is getting much of his empire back. Herein lies the problem: He has to figure out a way to get the money to get ASM under his own possession, and it could cost more than $10 million.

Probably the most pathetic thing that we saw from Spencer in this episode was having to ask Ricky Jerret for a huge sum of money to help get things together. Eventually Ricky agreed, but he has his own issues at the moment. For example, he’s still trying to figure out Los Angeles or Miami as his future playing home, and also patch things up with Charles.

The most entertaining part of this episode surprisingly came from Travis, a man who did everything that he could at first to jeopardize his draft chances only for Spencer and company to eventually manage to turn things around for him. Eventually, Baltimore took him with the #6 pick, which was great news for his future! Unfortunately for Spencer, at the same time his employment status was leaked to everyone at the party before it’s all resolved.

The one thing we’re still wondering about more so than any other is the relationship between Spencer and Tracy, given that for the most part it’s nonexistent. She is heading to Bristol to work now at ESPN, and that’s great for her. Yet, at the same time, what’s the point of these two having a relationship if you’re never going to show much of it? You can always figure out a way to get Spencer out there more often if you need to.

In the end, we do wish the episode delved more into Spencer’s addictions than it did, but at the same time we will at least admit that we appreciated the development that we had. Episode Grade: B.
