Creative Arts Emmys 2016: Tina Fey / Amy Poehler, Margo Martindale, Hank Azaria among winners
While the Emmys may be taking place next weekend on ABC, today we got what we’d like to call a rather nice preview for that show with the winners of the Creative Arts Emmys at a separate ceremony. The biggest winner was “Game of Thrones” with a solid nine victories across several technical categories, while “The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story” also took home four. Ultimately, we consider this for the most part to be a nice precursor to everything that we end up seeing down the road next week.
Below, we’re going to focus specifically on some of the guest categories, given that these are the ones that tend to generate the most discussion. We also have some bones to pick here with some of the choices.
Guest Actress, Drama – We love Character Actress Margo Martindale as much as the next person, but having her win for “The Americans” the past two years is a little unusual given her lack of screen time. It is still better than when she won last year for just a tiny scene.
Guest Actor, Drama – Hank Azaria, “Ray Donovan.” We love the choice here. He had a big part to play, and he created a great character in limited screen time.
Guest Actress, Comedy – Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, “Saturday Night Live.” This is notable in that it’s Poehler’s first Emmy win, and it is also the first win by a duo in this category. Ironically, we actually thought they’ve both done much better work on “SNL” than in this particular episode.
Guest Actor, Comedy – Peter Scolari, “Girls.” Another interesting choice, given that he wasn’t even originally on the ballot until a last-minute change.
