‘Saturday Night Live’ re-watch: Do Ariana Grande’s impressions of Britney Spears, Shakira, others still land?

This weekend marks “Saturday Night Live” replaying an episode from earlier this year featuring none other than Ariana Grande as host, and this is one that we have to say turned out to be one of the funniest surprises of the year. The Mermaids sketch was pretty fun and the show got off to a fairly solid start, but the sketch that really got people talking at the time was the Tidal one where the pop star had a chance to show off a variety of her musical impressions in order to save the streaming music company.

Of course, the whole idea for this is ridiculously absurd, but we’re fine with something that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. If we were to criticize “SNL” for this, after all, we’d be criticizing a pretty hefty percentage of everything that they put out there.

The impressions here are for the most part REALLY good, whether it be the Britney Spears, the Shakira, or the Celine Dion. Sure, some of them are better than others, but this is a microcosm of what Grande does best as a comic performer: She’s not afraid to put herself out there, and she’s not afraid to come up with fun ways in order to use her considerable talent.

We do recognize that Grande had done many of these impressions before on “The Tonight Show” and with that, this is not the most original sketch in the world. Yet, we do still find it fun, and if you haven’t watched it in a while there is a certain essence of replay-ability that comes along with it.
