‘Sherlock’ season 4: Could this season be the last?
Even though we still have a little ways to go until the fourth season of “Sherlock” officially premieres on BBC One (let alone on PBS in America), we don’t think that is anywhere close to too early to start asking a question that has been on the forefront of many minds out there: Are we nearing the end of the series? Is there a lot more of the story to be told.
In theory, the answer to this question is that there are many Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories that could be adapted, and to go along with that further, we’re talking about two people here in Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss who have the reputation for being two of the most innovative, forward-thinking writers in the business. If anyone can come up with some new and worthy additions to “Sherlock,” it is these guys.
However, the issue at this point beyond this season seems to be one of interest and scheduling for all parties involved. Does everyone really want to keep making them? In the past, Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch have appreciated the fact that the schedule allows them to go do other things and then return here at their leisure, and maybe that is something that they could continue. Yet, they don’t have any pressure to keep doing that since they’re in control of their own destiny.
One other possible clue to the series’ future: While at San Diego Comic-Con, the entire panel was cagey on if there’ll be more. For now, they seem to be going all-out on this present batch, and they will reassess and look more towards the future down the road.
