‘MasterChef’ season 7, episode 16 exclusive preview: A mystery box within a mystery box

Tonight, “MasterChef” is again giving you double the drama with two episodes airing back-to-back on Fox, and by the end of it, the field is going to be even closer to set for the upcoming finale. Everyone who is left is extremely skilled, but we’ve certainly seen the past few episodes that even the smallest mistake can doom you.

Luckily, it seems as though the remaining home cooks are going to be given something to help focus them in before the big finale: Some love from home! In the exclusive sneak peek below, you can see some friends and family stop by to assist in a very unique Mystery Box Challenge: Inside the typical box is a smaller box, and inside it is an ingredient hand-picked for the home cook by their loved ones. They’ll have to make a delicious dish highlighting that, and in theory, this should play to everyone’s strengths.

We do very much like this idea, given that you’re getting a real shot to see everyone in their comfort zone like never before. Of course, there is a potential complication that could come with that, as we certainly can envision some scenarios where someone is so confident that they lose focus, and deliver something that is either A) expected or B) slightly below what the expectation is at this point in the series’ run.

The good news is that unless this is some sudden change-up to the format, this challenge is likely just for an advantage and not an elimination. If someone struggles, odds are they’ll get a shot at redemption down the road.
