Every season, “Dancing with the Stars” has at least one pair that causes all sorts of conversation and chaos, and this time around, this couple seems to be Rick Perry and Emma Slater. The former Texas Governor is the sort of guy who could have a conservative base, but at the same time, he was also one of the first people who withdrew from this past Presidential election. Not only that, but a good half of the country would probably never vote for him based on his political leanings alone.
So can Governor Perry be a good enough dancer — and appeal to his fans enough — to make it reasonably far? That’s what we want to look at in the newest edition of our show spotlight series.
Claim to fame – Former Texas Governor and also two-time Republican Presidential candidate. He’s known for having strong opinions, but also for making some goofs, mostly notable in the 2012 race when he could not remember what three agencies he would eliminate as President.
Partner – Emma Slater. She is making her first appearance in a couple of seasons, and she has certainly run the gamut when it comes to partners! Remember when she was working with Hayes Grier? Well, Perry seems to be more or less the opposite of that.
Strengths – Remember Bristol Palin? We’re not sure any person out there would consider her to be a great dancer, but at the same time she had a passionate conservative following who kept her alive week in and week out. While not every GOP voter may have wanted Rick to be President, they could all rally behind him to keep him in the show longer than he would otherwise be.
Weaknesses – The biggest issue for Perry is pretty simple: We’re not sure he has a shred of dancing ability. At 66 years old, he is one of the oldest competitors this season, and he also has no experience in anything similar to this. Suffice it to say, he has his work cut out for him.
Prediction – We don’t see Perry making it to the finale like Bristol, but we could envision him making it to around the final seven and frustrating many fans out there who are voting more on the basis of dance ability than their political beliefs.
How well do you think Perry will fare this season? Vote in the poll below!
