‘Major Crimes’ season 5, episode 10 review: Buzz steps up; a larger operation surfaces
Over the years, we’ve certainly seen the Buzz character on “Major Crimes” encounter a few precarious situations, and we’ve also seen him observe some from afar. Based on what we saw on Monday night’s new episode, clearly he picked up a few tricks from Sharon Raydor and some other key closers over time! His interrogation scene was pretty darn excellent, and it came at a time when we are finally starting to understand more of his past and what happened to his father.
While Buzz didn’t necessary find everything he was looking for, he got more information about a witness — and was then able to use some of his skills with the other case at hand. We do want an entire episode about his investigation at some point, but we’ll take what we can for now.
Aside from Buzz, this episode was an extremely intense hour with some of the most action-packed scenes out there, given that we had to see Sharon actor in order to ensure the safety of Andy and everyone else. We also saw the protective side of Julio, and there’s always a certain sweetness to that. Much of his foster son’s behavior and racism was tied back to a group of White Supremacists who he grew up around, and taught him that this was the way.
Ultimately, what Julio found was in the process of investigating what happened to his foster kid’s mother, there was a larger, much more dangerous operation going on here. Dwight Darnell is a ringleader, and he’s a name you will be hearing over the next couple of weeks. This is a situation that is very much still in play despite the violence tonight.
In the end, this “Major Crimes” episode is going to set the stage for next week’s “White Lies,” which uses the case of the White Supremacists to set up an arc that will test the characters in some pretty incredible ways. So long as the subsequent episodes are of this quality, it’s hard to imagine any fans feeling too disappointed in the end. The Dr. Joe brought happiness to many, but that may be short-lived given the teasers we’ve seen for next week.
One final note: these the best performances from Phillip Keane and Mary McDonnell this season? We certainly think so. Grade: B+.
