‘Ray Donovan’ season 4 video: Eddie Marsan on playing Terry
While we’re in the midst of the fourth season of “Ray Donovan,” it’s hard sometimes to see the forest through the trees. That is why right now we focus so much on the crazy and the shocking, especially when you are fearful that major things are going to happen a la character deaths. As a result of this, you do sometimes miss the little things like the subtleties that someone puts into a performance.
Ultimately, one of the better performances we are getting at present with the show is Eddie Marsan as the Terry character, and in a video over on Showtime’s YouTube channel, you can see the actor speak further about the role and how he works with the show’s producers to ensure that things are progressing at a natural pace. Here’s a quick transcript of what he has to say:
“Myself and [executive producer] Dave Hollander, we have a talk about progression of Terry’s disease and his symptoms. I talk to Parkinson’s sufferers, and we decide on how far the disease has progressed … We have to develop new symptoms, a different shake or a different speech pattern. That takes up most of my work … It’s a big responsibility to get it right, because Terry is someone who has Parkinson’s disease but also is very stoic and self-reliant, and I think it’s a great thing to show on a big show like this, but we have to get it right.”
Ultimately, we do think that the character is entirely compelling to watch and also authentic; a fine example of that is that when you see Marsan versus his character, whether it be the mannerisms or the accent, they really do feel like two different people.
