‘Empire’ season 3 trailer offers first look at Mariah Carey

While “Empire” may be making as many headlines this summer for their big-name guest stars, they ironically have their most-famous person yet stopping by this fall in Mariah Carey. The legendary singer is fittingly playing a superstar in her own right, and you can see a first glimpse at her in the trailer below (first posted by Entertainment Weekly).

For the most part, though, we would say that this trailer covers most of the familiar / expected notes for the show, whether it be talk about family, hints at violence, and a complicated relationship between Cookie and Lucious Lyon. We figure at this point that we’re going to continue to see this relationship be complex for however long that it remains on the air.

One other thing that is especially notable about this preview is who ultimately does not make an appearance. Specifically, we’re talking about Anika or Rhonda! The show is continuing to milk this particular cliffhanger for almost everything that they can, and at this point it’s hard to blame them since they want to give viewers a reason to watch live. Carey’s appearance will be fun, but we don’t anticipate it being anywhere near as relevant to the story as what we end up seeing here.

Ultimately, “Empire” is coming back on Wednesday, September 21 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time. We’re going to have a whole lot more time to discuss what’s next in the coming weeks, so be sure to come back throughout!
