Are you ready to get a touch of royalty on Netflix later this fall? Well, you’re going to have it in the form of “The Crown,” one of the most-ambitious new projects that we’ve had a chance to see them create and cultivate to date. The story of Queen Elizabeth II is one that has already been adapted many times, but for this show we’re focusing on a specific era where the world was on the brink if drastically changing. This has the potential as a result of that to be one of the more captivating versions of her life to date.
Below, you can see our take on the series so far in the latest chapter of our Fall Preview series.
Premiere Date and Timeslot Competition – November 4. This series is a little bit different than any other that we’ve discussed in this series to date, mostly because there’s not any one-for-one competition. There’s no timeslot! The biggest thing it has to worry about is everything on the air during November sweeps, one of the craziest times for every network out there.
Logline – “A Netflix original series, The Crown focuses on Queen Elizabeth II as a 25-year-old newlywed faced with the daunting prospect of leading the world’s most famous monarchy while forging a relationship with legendary Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill.”
Cast – Claire Foy, Matt Smith, Jared Harris, John Lithgow, Vanessa Kirby, and Greg Wise.
Trailer – The sizzle reel below is authentic and fantastic. Netflix has shown a knack for great period drama (check out “Marco Polo” if you haven’t already), and we certainly think that this has a chance to match that. you’ve got the costumes, the set, and the performances all on-point. Given that this is a biopic-of-sorts, you’re not going to get much in the way of surprises. We just hope that the series matches some of the authenticity we see here.
Overall Take – Expectations are going to be the series’ worst enemy, given that “The Crown” has been on the radar of many for quite a long time now and everyone is interested in seeing if there will be emotional resonance crammed in to what is inherently an interesting tale for modern audiences to see. There are certain aspects of the production we are confident in already; the next challenge will merely be having the consistency and quality of the overall package match that.
