‘Major Crimes’ season 5: Prepare for a three-part episode!
One of the things that we saw with “Major Crimes” season 4 was a little bit of experimentation, and that was something that we personally appreciated about the “Hindsight” arc. For the first time, the TNT series got a chance to explore a single storyline for longer than a couple of episodes, and there were an increased number of suspects and developments as a result of that. We are aware that the storyline was somewhat-polarizing to longtime fans who prefer more of a procedural format, but to us the long-form mystery remains one of our favorite mediums of storytelling. Sometimes when you have a new case every week, they all tend to blend together and you lose a little bit of their individual impact.
What we are here to share with you now is news that the series is maybe trying to give you the best of both worlds as we near the end of the summer portion of the season. From September 5 through the 19th (the date of the summer finale), we’re going to have a chance to see a three-part story entitled “White Lies.” Details are forthcoming (we’ll have more over the weekend), but this should help close this particular chapter of the show.
For those of you who are more of the procedural fans, this story’s not lasting as long as “Hindsight” so it will have more of that feel. Yet, simultaneously this will elevate the story beyond the typical case. In theory, it sounds great — but we gotta see it now in practice. Being that season 5’s been on a role creatively (at least in terms of giving each cast member interesting material to work with), we’re excited to see what this story could contain.

That’s great news. The “Hindsight” arc in season 4 was marvelous. Like you said, because of the five parts, a more complex character-driven story could be told. I loved that! – Three parts may be some sort of compromise, but: a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
