‘Arrow’ season 5 spoilers: Pay ‘Penance’
If you enjoy “Arrow” when their episode titles are as cryptic as humanly possible, we come bearing great news for you!
According to a tweet (see below) from executive producer Marc Guggenheim, “Penance” is the title for the upcoming fourth episode of season 5. Familiar names Brian Ford Sullivan and Oscar Balderrama are behind it, as is Dermott Downs doing his third episode of the series to date. (Fun fact: Downs has directed episodes of every single show within the Greg Berlanti universe — heck, he’s also done “Blindspot,” another show outside of the universe with Berlanti as an executive producer.)
“Penance” suggests that someone needs to pay back someone, but that’s all we really have on it. Maybe this is the John Diggle redemption story? If that proves to be the case, we’d certainly be rather down with that since the guy’s story is as cloudy as the Star City sky at present. We know he’s back in the army, a place where he wants to right the wrongs of his life following the betrayal at the hands of his brother Andy. This is his opportunity at redemption, and at seeing if tomorrow still exists for him.
Maybe we are traveling too far down this road given that the title could be referencing something altogether different. The truth here is that in between Oliver’s latest recruiting efforts and a somewhat-enigmatic Big Bad, there is still so much about season 5 we don’t quite know. It’s exciting in some ways and frustrating in others since of course we’d love to have something specific on the other side of the horizon to anticipate.
